What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last four teeth to grow into your mouth. They usually grow in between the ages of 17 and 25. Even when there are no obvious problems, proactive parents bring their teens in if they are at risk of future dental complications from wisdom teeth, such as overcrowding or infections. Wisdom teeth that come in at an angle can also damage otherwise healthy teeth that are nearby.

Board-Certified

Drs. Bird and Johnson are exceptionally trained doctors. Both are fellows of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and diplomates of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, meaning they are board certified.

Advanced Technology

Our Cocoa, FL, practice features advanced technology not always used by dentists. For wisdom teeth removal, we'll first assess your mouth using a panoramic X-ray to capture a full view of the teeth and surrounding structures to plan your procedure.

Safe, Effective Sedation

Our oral surgeons have advanced training in sedation procedures that dentists typically lack. Bird and Johnson, Oral Surgery offers nitrous oxide and intravenous (IV) sedation, allowing us to ensure safe, pain-free care in even complicated extractions.

Peace of Mind
Request a Consultation

Whether you are concerned about your child's oral health or are experiencing symptoms that could be tied to wisdom teeth, Drs. Bird or Johnson can assess your situation and determine the best course of action. Both have extensive training, well beyond what is required for a dental degree, and can perform complex wisdom tooth removal safely and pain-free.

Using advanced imaging technology, they can also accurately assess your teen's mouth and predict what, if any, complications they may face from wisdom teeth. By knowing beforehand, parents can proactively have wisdom teeth removed before damage occurs and plan dental surgery for a time that is convenient, such as during school vacations.

Both of our doctors have more than 30 years of experience and can safely treat complex wisdom tooth extractions that dentists typically avoid. If symptoms suggest you are suffering complications from a wisdom tooth, leave us a message or request a consultation at Bird and Johnson, Oral Surgery in Cocoa, FL.

What to Expect During
Wisdom Tooth Removal

Before taking any steps, our oral surgeons in Cocoa, FL, will first assess your mouth using panoramic X-rays. Our advanced imaging technology provides detailed information that is not captured in a typical dental X-ray. Using this information, our doctors are able to precisely plan your surgery and avoid nearby sensitive tissue, such as important nerves in the jaw.

Our oral surgeons have advanced training and are better prepared than a typical dentist to handle complex wisdom teeth removal cases.

Your Comfort Comes First

Our oral surgeons use a combination of local anesthesia and IV sedation or nitrous oxide. This approach keeps the treatment area numb and induces a deep sense of relaxation so patients feel comfortable throughout the procedure.

Simple Tooth Extraction

The doctor will make a careful incision in the gums to access the wisdom teeth. The extraction technique will then depend on the extent of the impaction. In simpler cases, the surgeon may be able to loosen the tooth by gently rocking it and then lifting it out.

Complex Tooth Extraction

An angled wisdom tooth or one trapped in bone requires extra steps. Bone or gum tissue trapping the tooth typically needs to be removed. Sometimes the tooth needs to be separated into smaller pieces to minimize the impact on nearby soft tissue. Our thorough sedation techniques will keep you comfortable.
